Five books to read right now

Autumn is here. It's crisp and cold and the wonderful shades of orange and brass have taken over. Put the long dark evenings to good use by curling up with your book, cup of tea and favourite candle flickering away.

But if you are struggling with what to read next I've pulled together some of my favourite reads of late that may well catch your eye and have you curling up on the sofa in no time.

1. The Baltimore Boys, Joël Ducker

Mr Ducker is one of my favourite authors. He is the man behind The Truth about the Harry Qubert Affair - which is a book I have pushed on so many people over the years. Now you don't have had to have read The Qubert Affair to enjoy the Baltimore boys. It's a sequel and prequal to The Affair

2. The Dead of Winter, Rennie Airth

Now unhelpfully this is book three of the John Madden series, so if you haven't read any before then start with The River of Darkness. If you have then you need to keep on reading. This is a wonderfully moody book that suits the short dark days of November. Be warned these are a tad more violent than your standard Agatha Christies.

3. My Absolute Darling, Gabriel Tallent

This has been one of the most talked about books of the year and with good reason. There isn't much more to say other than if you haven't read it you are missing out. Simple as that.

4. The Christmas Chronicles, Nigel Slater

A love letter to Winter and a celebration of bringing people together through food, which for me is the true spirit of Christmas. In this magical book, there's tidbits, recipes, history and memoir - it will have you running for the nearest snowy landscape.

5. Never Mind, Edward St Aubyn

This series ventures into the dark side of family and the path of self destruction. The first in the series is shocking and uncomfortable but that's exactly what the author is after. What seems wonderfully idyllic on the outside can hide all manner of evils. Oh and it's being adapted with Benedict Cumberbatch as our angsty protagonist.

Let me know how you get on! Happy Reading!
